Fifteen students from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FIKP) of Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) have undergone a rigorous selection process to participate in a summer course on Coral Reef Ecology in Hoga Island, Wakatobi, South East Sulawesi.
The selection process consisted of a written test on June 7, 2024, and an interview on June 10, 2024. The examiners and interviewers were Dr. Aidah Ambo Ala, M.Sc., Dr. Syafyudin Yusuf, M.Si., and Dr. Yayu Anugrah La Nafie, ST., M.Sc.
The head of the International Collaboration Unit of FIKP UNHAS, Dr. Shinta Werorilangi, M.Sc., explained that the summer course aims to increase students' knowledge in Coral Reef Ecology, provide them with experience in collaborating with students from other countries (including UK, Australia, Norwegia, and other European countries), and increase their SCUBA diving skills.

Prof. Dr. Ahmad Faizal, ST., M.Si., the vice dean for partnerships, research, and innovations, also added that the summer course is a collaboration between FIKP UNHAS and Operation Wallacea (Opwal), a UK-based organization that conducts research and conservation projects in various parts of the world. The activity was previously stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022 but resumed last year in 2023.
Twelve students from FIKP UNHAS have been selected to participate in the summer course, which is divided into two batches. The first batch will take place from June 24 to July 7, 2024, and the second from July 14 to 21, 2024. Four students from FIKP UNHAS will join the first batch, and the remaining eight will join the second batch. The summer course is an exciting opportunity for FIKP UNHAS students to gain valuable experience in Coral Reef Ecology and to build networks with students from other countries.
