The Faculty of Marine and Fisheries Sciences (FIKP) UNHAS is ready to collaborate in the successful implementation of the "Smart Island" pilot project in South Sulawesi. This initiative is a joint effort involving Hasanuddin University, Oriental Consultants Global, and the Makassar City Government.

The project was inaugurated on February 22, 2024, in Barrang Lompo Island, with the opening speech delivered by Prof. Safruddin, the Dean of the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries. Prof. Jamaluddin Jompa, the Rector of UNHAS, also welcomed the guests and participants. In his speech, Prof. Jamaluddin Jompa expressed optimism for the success of the project, highlighting its potential to address longstanding issues such as electricity shortages and fishery product sustainability.

The event featured the laying of the first stone for the construction of cold storage facilities, a crucial step towards enhancing the quality of fishermen's catches in Barrang Lompo Island.
Among the guests and participants were representatives of the Mayor of Makassar, Nur Kamarul Z, Meiji Yonezawa (Oriental Consultant Global) and team, Nozomu Ono (Japan International Cooperation Agency-JICA), President Director of PT. OCI Hiromi Tazawa, Yoshifumi Mitsunaga (Kyuden Mirai Energy), UNHAS executive leaders, Local Police Officers of Ujung Tanah Sub-sector, The Secretary of Sangkarang Sub-district, The Head of Barrang Lompo Island, and local community members.

FIKP UNHAS is fully committed to supporting the development of Barrang Lompo Island as a "Smart Island" by actively participating in this project. Leveraging its expertise and resources, FIKP UNHAS aims to contribute to the research, development, and implementation of environmentally friendly and sustainable technologies in Barrang Lompo Island.

This project represents an innovative approach to utilizing technology for improving quality of life and ensuring environmental sustainability. Through strong collaboration among educational institutions, global consultants, and local governments. This project will serve as a model for other regions seeking to implement the smart island concept for sustainable development.
