Hasanuddin University (Unhas), widely known as the Red Campus, has once again achieved international recognition by securing 1st place in Indonesia and 31st place globally in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: Life Below Water in the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026. This remarkable achievement further strengthens Unhas' position as one of the world's leading universities committed to marine ecosystem conservation and the sustainable management of marine resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026 (formerly known as the THE Impact Rankings) evaluated 561 universities from 84 countries and territories based on their contributions toward achieving SDG 14: Life Below Water. The ranking assesses how higher education institutions contribute through education, research, institutional policies, partnerships, and real-world initiatives that promote the sustainable management of marine resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The SDG 14 assessment focuses on several key areas, including sustainable fisheries management, the protection of coastal and marine ecosystems, the reduction of marine pollution, efforts to combat unregulated fishing, addressing the impacts of ocean acidification, and conserving marine biodiversity through research, education, and community engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the global level, Griffith University (Australia) and The University of Manchester (United Kingdom) shared the top position for SDG 14. Asia also demonstrated outstanding performance, with universities from Vietnam, South Korea, and Taiwan ranking among the world's top ten. Meanwhile, the Philippines recorded the highest number of institutions represented in the SDG 14 rankings, with 65 universities included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the faculty specializing in marine and fisheries sciences, the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries (FIKP), Hasanuddin University, plays a strategic role in supporting this achievement through excellence in education, research, and community service focused on the sustainable management of marine and fisheries resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
FIKP's contributions are reflected in a wide range of research initiatives, including marine biodiversity conservation, ecosystem-based fisheries management, coastal ecosystem rehabilitation, marine pollution and microplastic mitigation, sustainable aquaculture development, and technological innovations that support the implementation of the Blue Economy and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This achievement serves as a source of motivation for the entire FIKP academic community to continuously enhance the quality of education, strengthen research collaborations, and generate innovations that create meaningful impacts for society and the environment.
