The Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries (FIKP), Hasanuddin University, once again organized The 13th National and The 9th International Symposium on Marine and Fisheries (SYMARFISH) 2026, held on Saturday (20\/6\/2026). Carrying the theme \u201cScience-driven Innovation in the Blue Economy: Achieving Food Security and the SDGs,\u201d the scientific forum brought together academics, researchers, government representatives, industry practitioners, and other stakeholders to exchange ideas and research findings in support of sustainable marine and fisheries resource management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amid global challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, and increasing food demand, the marine and fisheries sector plays a crucial role in strengthening food security while contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through SYMARFISH 2026, FIKP Hasanuddin University seeks to foster science-based innovations capable of addressing these challenges through a sustainable blue economy approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The strong enthusiasm for the symposium was reflected in the participation of more than 120 participants and approximately 90 registered scientific abstracts. The presence of participants from various countries highlighted the growing international research network fostered through this forum and further strengthened FIKP Hasanuddin University's position as one of the leading centers for marine and fisheries sciences in the Asia-Pacific region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his remarks, the Rector of Hasanuddin University, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc., emphasized the importance of scientific forums as platforms for generating evidence-based recommendations that can serve as references for policy development in the marine and fisheries sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to him, Indonesia\u2019s vast marine resources must be managed through strong collaboration among government institutions, academia, industry, and society to ensure both economic benefits and the long-term sustainability of marine ecosystems for future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The symposium addressed a wide range of strategic topics, including aquatic biodiversity, aquatic resource conservation, oceanography and climate change, marine and fisheries biotechnology, sustainable aquaculture, marine geographic information systems, water pollution, fisheries product processing technologies, and the socio-economic dimensions of coastal communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
SYMARFISH 2026 also featured prominent speakers and experts from Indonesia and abroad. The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), represented by Dr. Zainal Arifin, presented Indonesia\u2019s marine research agenda and policy directions in support of the blue economy, food sovereignty, and the achievement of the SDGs. In addition, academics and researchers from T\u00fcrkiye, Malaysia, China, as well as various universities and research institutions across Indonesia, shared their experiences, research findings, and best practices in marine resource management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the plenary session, the symposium continued with parallel presentations, providing participants with opportunities to present their research findings and receive feedback from experts in their respective fields. The forum is expected to strengthen research collaboration, expand international academic networks, and stimulate innovations that contribute meaningfully to the development of the marine and fisheries sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a scientific forum that has been continuously organized for more than a decade, SYMARFISH represents one of FIKP Hasanuddin University\u2019s tangible contributions to advancing scientific knowledge, technological innovation, and science-based policymaking.
