Makassar, August 15, 2024- The Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries (FIKP) UNHAS hosted a public lecture featuring two esteemed researchers from Wageningen University, the Netherlands. Pepijn Van Oort and Ingrid Gever, renowned for their work in sustainable food production through aquaculture systems, delivered a comprehensive presentation on strategic issues in this field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event took place in Room KP 311-312, 3rd-floor FIKP UNHAS, from 09.00 to 12.00 WITA, and was opened by Dr. Yayu La Nafie, ST., M.Sc. as the secretary of the Quality Assurance and Reputation Enhancement Unit (GPMPR) FIKP, representing the Dean. In her remarks, Yayu conveyed apologies and greetings from the Dean and the Dean's staff who could not attend and open the event due to various other agendas (such as Unhas Day and the commemoration of National Ecology Day of China), which took place simultaneously. Yayu was also pleased with the presence of the two speakers, which indicates that the collaboration with Wageningen University from 2019 to 2024 is still ongoing and hopes to provide significant benefits for the development of seaweed cultivation and various related parties. The moderator of this public lecture was Dr. Jamaluddin Fitrah Alam, S.Pi., M.Si. The public lecture was attended by students, lecturers, and academic staff of FIKP UNHAS, who enthusiastically utilized this rare opportunity to broaden their horizons in marine and fisheries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his first presentation, Pepijn Van Oort elaborated on The Wageningen Project: Sustainable Food Production from Aquatic Systems. He explained how Wageningen University applies a scientific approach to increase sustainable food production through innovative aquatic systems. Oort emphasized the importance of balancing food production and ecosystem conservation, which is the basis of their various research projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Van Oort also presented his research on the Effects of Seaweed Seedling Starting Weight, Longline, Tubenet, and Cages on Seaweed Growth in Southeast Sulawesi. The study, which focused on various factors affecting seaweed growth in West Sulawesi, including seedling starting weight, the use of longlines, tube nets, and cages, revealed findings that are expected to significantly boost seaweed production in Indonesia, inspiring hope for a more sustainable future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following that, Ingrid Weger also shared insights on the importance of cross-sector collaboration in a presentation titled Multi-stakeholder Collaboration for Food, Agriculture, and Nature. They emphasized that sustainability in food production can only be achieved with cooperation between various stakeholders, ranging from the government, universities, and the private sector to local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event is part of FIKP UNHAS' efforts to continue to broaden the horizons and knowledge of its lecturers and students and strengthen international collaboration in research and education in marine and fisheries. Through activities like this, FIKP UNHAS hopes to play a more significant role in global efforts to achieve sustainability in the food and environmental sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the end of this public lecture, it is hoped that the cooperation between UNHAS and Wageningen University will not stop at one activity but still continuing in the form of joint research and knowledge exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
