The Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries (FIKP) at Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) held a public lecture titled \"The Ecology of Sea Turtle and Humans\" on Tuesday, February 27th, 2024. The lecture was delivered by Prof. Naoki Kamezaki, Ph.D. from Okayama University of Science, Japan, in the Meeting Room of FIKP UNHAS.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his lecture, Prof. Naoki discussed the evolution of the relationship between humans and sea turtles from ancient times to the present, highlighting the transition from exploitation to conservation efforts. In the past, humans often utilized sea turtles as tools (for agriculture and other needs) and for consumption. However, over time, awareness of the importance of environmental conservation has increased. Prof. Naoki explained how conservation efforts have been made to protect turtle populations, which are increasingly threatened by human activities.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event began with an opening address by the Dean, represented by Dr. Yayu La Nafie, ST., M.Sc., as the Secretary of the Quality Assurance and Reputation Enhancement (GPMPR) of FIKP. In her address, Yayu expressed gratitude for Prof. Naoki's for his willingness to give a public lecture at FIKP, which would provide knowledge and broaden the perspectives of FIKP students and lecturers regarding the evolution of the relationship between humans and sea turtles over time. Additionally, Yayu expected this event would lead to collaboration between Okayama University of Science and UNHAS, particularly with FIKP. The public lecture, moderated by Dr. Andi Amri, S.Pi, M.Si, was attended by lecturers and students from various study programs at FIKP UNHAS whom were anthusiastic with Prof. Naoki's presentation. A lively discussion also took place during the question and answer session. This public lecture is a part of FIKP UNHAS's efforts to expand academic knowledge and raise awareness of marine conservation among the academic community.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n
