Makassar, June 15, 2025 — The Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries , Hasanuddin University (FIKP UNHAS), successfully hosted the 2025 Symposium on Marine Science and Fisheries (Symarfish) at the UNHAS Hotel. This scientific forum brought together academics, researchers, practitioners, and students in a shared effort to strengthen the blue economy and promote sustainable oceans.
The event commenced with a report from the Organizing Committee Chair, Jamaluddin Fitah Alam, S.Pi., M.Sc., Ph.D., who announced that representatives from seven countries participated in the symposium. As part of the program, a National Scientific Poster Competition for senior high school students was held, serving as a platform for the younger generation to voice innovative ideas in support of SDG 14: "Life Below Water."

The symposium, themed “Blue Economy: Innovative Science-Driven Pathways to Achieve the SDGs, then proceeded with the official opening by the Rector of Universitas Hasanuddin, Prof. Dr. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc. Prof. JJ emphasized that ocean conservation efforts require the synergy of science, technology, policy, and the participation of coastal communities.


In the main session, keynote address were delivered by Rear Admiral Dr. Abdul Rivai Ras, Advisory Staff of the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy and Dr. Hendra Yusran Siry, S.Pi., M.Sc., Expert Advisory Staf of the chief of staf . The symposium also featured international speakers:
- Prof. Reiji Matsuda (Kyoto University)
- Dr. Khor Waiho (University Malaysia Terengganu)
- Prof. Zou Leilei (Shanghai Ocean University)
- Dr. rer. nat. Elmi Nurhidayah (Hasanuddin University*)
The international session was moderated by Dr. Widyastuti Umar. The national discussion featured:
- Ivonne M. Radjawane, Ph.D. (Marine Technology Cooperation Research Center Indonesia)
- Dr. Hendra Yusran Siry, S.Pi., M.Sc., Advisory Staff to the Minister for Marine Ecology and Resources (delivered online)
- Prof. Andi Adri Arief, S.Pi., M.Si. (Hasanuddin University)
Moderated by Dr. Nursinah Amir. The national speakers explored the roadmap for the blue economy and strategies for empowering coastal communities.











Dozens of creative student posters showcasing ideas on marine conservation, fisheries entrepreneurship, and ocean literacy competed in the National Scientific Poster Competition for senior high school students. The ten best posters were displayed and re-evaluated by symposium participants.
The event officially closed with remarks from Prof. Dr. Ir. Aslamyah, M.P., Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, representing the Dean of FIKP UNHAS. In her speech, Prof. Aslamyah expressed appreciation for the international engagement and the enthusiasm of young participants.
“Symarfish 2025 drives real innovation and global synergy to keep our oceans sustainable and beneficial for all,” she remarked.
With the successful implementation of this event series, Symarfish 2025 reaffirmed FIKP UNHAS’s commitment to advancing research, collaboration, and marine education that directly contribute to achieving SDG 14 and ensuring a sustainable blue future for the next generation.
