The Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries (FIKP), Hasanuddin University, has officially inaugurated the Prof. Dr. M. Natsir Nessa Auditorium as a tribute to the remarkable service, dedication, and contributions of the late Prof. Dr. M. Natsir Nessa to the advancement of marine science and the development of Hasanuddin University.
The inauguration ceremony, held on the 4th floor of the FIKP Building on Saturday (20/6/2026), was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the signing of a commemorative plaque by the Rector of Hasanuddin University, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc., accompanied by the Dean of FIKP, Prof. Dr. Mahatma, S.T., M.Sc. The event was attended by university leaders, faculty administrators, lecturers, educational staff, students, and invited guests.
For the academic community of Hasanuddin University, particularly within FIKP, the name Prof. Dr. M. Natsir Nessa holds a special significance. Born in Belawa on December 27, 1948, he was widely recognized as a distinguished scholar who made significant contributions to the advancement of marine science and became one of the key figures in the long history of Hasanuddin University.
Throughout his academic career, Prof. Natsir Nessa held numerous strategic leadership positions within the university, including Head of the Hydrology and Production Division of the Faculty of Agriculture, Chair of the Department of Socioeconomics at the Faculty of Animal Science, Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science, Head of the Marine Science Study Program, Director of Graduate Studies, Secretary of the Academic Senate, and member of the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT). Towards the end of his service, he was also entrusted as a member of the Board of Trustees (MWA) of Hasanuddin University.
In academia, Prof. Natsir Nessa was known as an educator who consistently promoted maritime research based on the local potential of Eastern Indonesia. His ideas, vision, and dedication laid an important foundation for the development of education, research, and community service in marine and fisheries sciences, which continue to thrive within FIKP today
In his remarks, the Rector of Hasanuddin University, Prof. Jamaluddin Jompa, stated that naming the auditorium after Prof. Natsir Nessa serves as an institutional tribute to an academic figure who left an extraordinary legacy of knowledge and service for the advancement of higher education.
“The great name of Prof. Natsir Nessa will always inspire future generations to create, innovate, and dedicate their knowledge for the benefit of society,” said Prof. JJ.
Meanwhile, the Dean of FIKP, Prof. Mahatma, explained that the new auditorium forms part of the faculty’s efforts to enhance academic services while expanding opportunities for national and international research collaboration.
“We hope this auditorium will support various international scientific events and further strengthen FIKP Unhas as a reference center for sustainable blue economy development,” he remarked.
The Prof. Dr. M. Natsir Nessa Auditorium has been designed as a collaborative space to support seminars, conferences, research dissemination activities, and various academic programs. The facility is expected to symbolize the continuation of the spirit of scholarship and service that Prof. Natsir Nessa imparted to future generations.
The auditorium's inaugural use was integrated with the implementation of the Symposium on Marine and Fisheries (SYMARFISH) 2026, which carried the theme “Science-driven Innovation in the Blue Economy: Achieving Food Security and the SDGs.” This international scientific forum marked an appropriate milestone for the utilization of the new facility, which is envisioned as a hub for the exchange of ideas, innovation, and scientific collaboration in marine and fisheries sciences.
Through the inauguration of the Prof. Dr. M. Natsir Nessa Auditorium, FIKP Hasanuddin University not only introduces a new academic facility but also preserves the intellectual legacy of a figure who made profound contributions to the advancement of marine science, Hasanuddin University, and Indonesia.
More than just a name attached to a building, the auditorium stands as a reminder of Prof. Natsir Nessa’s lifelong dedication, exemplary leadership, and commitment to advancing higher education and scientific knowledge. May the knowledge he shared, the ideas he inspired, and the contributions he made to education and society continue to serve as a lasting legacy of benefit.
