The Faculty of Marine and Fisheries Science (FIKP) of Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) (Host), in collaboration with the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries of the University of West Sulawesi (Unsulbar) (Co-host), successfully organized "The 11th National & 7th International Symposium on Marine and Fisheries" with the theme "Exploring The Main Problems and Effective Solutions in the Marine and Fisheries Sectors Towards the Achievement of SDG 14 (Life Below Water)" at the UNHAS Hotel & Convention on Saturday, June 29, 2024.

This event featured prominent speakers from both national and international backgrounds. The keynote speaker was Dr. I Nyoman Radiarta, S.Pi., M.Sc., Head of the Agency for Human Resources Development and Extension of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, representing the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. Additionally, Prof. Dr. Ocky Karna Radjasa, M.Sc., Chair of the Earth and Maritime Research Organization at BRIN, delivered a presentation on future challenges and research directions in the marine and fisheries sectors.

The symposium was attended by approximately 122 participants, including national and international presenters and non-presenters. The event began with a traditional South Sulawesi dance performance, followed by the singing of the Indonesian national anthem and a prayer led by Kasri, M.Si. The event chair, Prof. Mukti Zainuddin, S.Pi., M.Sc., Ph.D., then delivered the event report, which was followed by a welcome address from the Rector of UNHAS, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc.

Keynote speaker Prof. Ocky Karna Radjasa presented the challenges and future research directions in the marine and fisheries sectors. The activity was followed by presentations from national invited speakers, such as Aida Sartimbul, Ph.D., who discussed the case study of Lemuru fisheries in East Java and Bali Strait in accelerating the SDGs, and Moh. Abdi Suhufan elaborated on the implications and strategies for addressing destructive fishing practices for sustainable fisheries. Prof. Najamuddin also presented the main problems and practical solutions in the marine and fisheries sectors towards achieving SDG 14.

Presentations from international invited speakers included Prof. Hannes Svardal on genomics as a tool for studying biodiversity, Prof. Takahiro Ota on sustainable fisheries in lakes considering endemic organisms, R. Dwi Susanto, Ph.D. on ocean-climate dynamics in Indonesian waters, Dr. Maulita Sari Hani on tourism and rural development, and Prof. Mahatma Lanuru on seagrass meadow restoration in Indonesia.

The event concluded with closing remarks from the Co-Host, the Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries of the University of West Sulawesi, Prof. Dr. Ir. Sitti Nurani Sirajuddin, S.Pt., M.Si., IPU., ASEAN Eng., and the Dean of the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries Science of Hasanuddin University, Prof. Safruddin, S.Pi., M.P., Ph.D.

As a mark of the event's conclusion, the Mayor of Makassar, Ir. H. Mohammad Ramdhan Pomanto, invited all guests and participants to a farewell dinner at his private residence, demonstrating his commitment to making Makassar a world-class city.
