Makassar (22/3). The Director General of Capture Fisheries M. Zulficar Mochtar delivered a public lecture to hundreds of students of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Hasanuddin University, Makassar. This public lecture was conducted in a series of activities to sign the cooperation between the Directorate General of Capture Fisheries,Ministry of Marine and Fisheries Affairs and 11 Universities representing the 11 Fisheries Management Areas of the Republic of Indonesia (WPPNRI) in Indonesia.
The main topics discussed in this public lecture were the transformation of capture fisheries management policies, abundant fish prosperous fishermen. Zulficar conveyed to students that we should not turn their backs on the sea because in the sea we are VICTORIOUS..!! “Mr. Joko Widodo has revived that the spirit of the Sea is the future of the nation. All of us should work as hard as possible to restore Indonesia as a maritime country,” he said.
The mandate of the President of the Republic of Indonesia is further translated into the vision of maritime and fisheries development in 2015-2019, which is to embody Indonesia’s independent and advanced marine and fisheries sector, based on national interests, with 3 (three) main missions: Sovereignty, Sustainability and Welfare. Zulficar explained about the Ministry’s efforts and the support of all stakeholders in combating IUU Fishing and regulating license as a tangible manifestation in enforcing sovereignty and sustainability.
Along with the success of eradicating IUU fishing, scientific evidence shows that the potential of fisheries in our marine WPPNRI from year to year is increasing. In 2013, the potential of our fisheries was recorded at 7.31 million tons, in 2015 it was increased to 9.93 million tons and encouraging results were recorded in 2016 and were approved by Decree of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries No. 50/2017 to 12.5 million tons.
